How to register with a new GP when you move house
If you're moving to a new area, you'll need to register with a GP surgery near your new address. Your old surgery's catchment area won't cover you anymore, which means you won't be able to book appointments there.
How to find a GP near your new address
Use the NHS Find a GP tool to search by postcode. It shows all GP surgeries near you, whether they're accepting new patients, and their ratings. Pick one that's convenient and currently accepting registrations.
How to register
Most surgeries let you register online through their website or the NHS app. You'll need proof of address (a utility bill or council tax letter) and your NHS number — though it's not essential. You don't need to contact your old surgery; they'll be notified automatically.
How long does it take?
Registration is usually processed within a few days. Your medical records are transferred automatically, though this can take a few weeks. You can still book appointments while your records are being transferred.
Don't leave it too long
This is one of those tasks people put off and then regret when they actually need a doctor. Register within the first couple of weeks of moving in — it takes 10 minutes and means you're covered if you need an appointment. You should also find a new dentist at the same time.
