How to notify your water company when you move house

Unlike gas and electricity, you can't choose your water supplier — it's based on your area. But you still need to tell your current water company you're leaving and find out who supplies your new address.

What do I need to do?

Contact your current water company with your move date and a final meter reading (if you have a water meter). They'll close your account and send a final bill. Then contact the water company at your new address to set up your account. You should do this at the same time as notifying your energy supplier and changing your council tax.

How do I find my new water company?

Water companies are regional — you can't switch. Your new property's water company is determined by its location. If you're not sure who it is, check your new property's paperwork or ask your estate agent or solicitor.

What about water meters?

If your current property has a water meter, take a reading on moving day. If your new property has one, take a reading when you arrive. If it doesn't have a meter, you'll pay a fixed annual charge based on the property's rateable value. See our guide on taking meter readings when moving for tips on recording gas, electricity, and water readings.

Common questions

Can I switch water company?
No — water supply is regional. Your supplier is determined by where you live.
What if I don't know if I have a water meter?
Check outside your property — meters are usually in a small covered box near the boundary. Your water company can also tell you.
Will I get a refund if I've overpaid?
Yes — if you've paid in advance by direct debit, your water company will refund any overpayment after your final bill is calculated.
