How to change your council tax when you move house

When you move house, you need to tell both your current council and your new council. If you don't, you could end up paying council tax at two addresses — or missing payments and getting chased for arrears.

What do I need to do?

Contact your current council to close your account and get a final bill. Then contact your new council to register at your new address. Most councils let you do both online. Do this on your moving day or the day after. You should also register on the electoral roll at your new address at the same time.

Will I get a refund?

If you've paid in advance by direct debit, your old council will refund any overpayment. This usually happens automatically within a few weeks. Your new council will send you a new bill — check the band is correct.

How do I check my council tax band?

You can check your council tax band on the Valuation Office Agency website. If you think the band is wrong, you can challenge it — especially if you've moved to a new-build or a property that's recently been renovated.

What if I'm moving mid-month?

Council tax is calculated daily, so you'll only pay for the days you're at each address. Your old council will pro-rate your final bill and your new council will do the same for your first bill. Don't forget to notify your water company too, as they're also linked to your local council area.

Common questions

What happens if I don't tell the council I've moved?
You could be charged at both addresses, or your old council could pursue you for unpaid tax. Always notify both councils. Setting up Royal Mail redirection can help catch any correspondence you miss during the transition.
Do I need to pay council tax on an empty property?
Most councils offer a discount or exemption for empty properties, but rules vary. Check with your local council.
Can I set up council tax before I move in?
Yes — most councils let you register in advance with your expected move-in date.
