How to update your V5C vehicle registration when you move

If you own a vehicle, you need to update the address on your V5C registration certificate (logbook) when you move. Like the driving licence, it's free and can be done online.

Why do I need to update my V5C?

Your V5C logbook is proof of the registered keeper of a vehicle. If the address is wrong, you won't receive important correspondence like MOT reminders, DVLA letters, or penalty charge notices. It's a legal requirement to keep it up to date. You should also update your driving licence at the same time.

How to update it

You can update your V5C online through GOV.UK. You'll need the 11-digit reference number from your V5C document and your new address. It takes about 2 minutes.

What if I can't find my V5C?

You can apply for a replacement V5C and update your address at the same time. This costs £25 and can be done through GOV.UK.

Common questions

Is updating my V5C free?
Yes, updating your address on an existing V5C is completely free.
Do I get a new V5C document?
Yes — a new V5C with your updated address will arrive within 2–4 weeks.
Can I update my V5C and driving licence at the same time?
They're separate services, but you can do both in the same sitting — it only takes a few minutes each. While you're at it, update your car insurance address and check if your vehicle tax address needs updating too.
