How to update your address with HMRC when you're PAYE employed

If you're employed and paid through PAYE, you should still let HMRC know your new address. While your employer handles most of your tax, HMRC sends correspondence about tax codes, refunds, and other matters directly to you.

Why you need to tell HMRC

HMRC may send you letters about your tax code, P800 tax calculation notices, or requests for information. If these go to your old address, you might miss important updates — including tax refunds or underpayment notices. Keeping your address current ensures you stay on top of your tax affairs. Setting up Royal Mail redirection is a good safety net while you update all your addresses.

How to update your address online

The easiest way is through your HMRC Personal Tax Account at GOV.UK. Sign in (or create an account using Government Gateway), go to your profile, and update your address. The change is immediate. You can also update it via the HMRC app. Make sure the address matches what your employer has on file.

Other ways to update

If you prefer, you can call HMRC's Income Tax helpline on 0300 200 3300 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm) or write to them. However, the online method is instant and avoids hold times. You'll need your National Insurance number when contacting them.

Common questions

Do I need to tell my employer as well as HMRC?
Yes. Tell your employer your new address so they can update their payroll records. This is separate from updating HMRC — both need to know.
What if I also do a Self Assessment tax return?
If you're employed but also file a Self Assessment (for example, for rental income or side income), updating your Personal Tax Account should cover both. Check your Self Assessment profile to be sure. If you're fully self-employed, see our guide on notifying HMRC when self-employed instead.
Is there a deadline to update my address with HMRC?
There's no specific legal deadline, but do it as soon as you move. Delays could mean missing important tax notices or refund cheques sent to your old address. You should also update your bank address to keep all your financial records consistent.
