Check your contract first
Start by reading your gym contract or membership agreement. Look for clauses about relocation, notice periods, and cancellation fees. Most gyms require 30 days' written notice to cancel. Some have minimum contract periods (often 12 months) with early termination fees.
Transferring to another branch
If your gym is part of a chain (PureGym, The Gym Group, David Lloyd, Nuffield Health, etc.), you may be able to transfer your membership to a branch near your new home. This is usually straightforward — contact your gym or update your home club in the app. Note that prices may differ between locations.

If you need to cancel, give written notice as specified in your contract — email is usually fine. For gyms that use direct debit, you can also cancel the direct debit with your bank, but it's better to cancel with the gym first to avoid being chased for missed payments. Make sure you've updated your bank address too so any refunds reach you. If you're within a minimum term, ask about a relocation clause — many gyms will let you leave without penalty if you can prove you've moved a certain distance (often 15+ miles) from the nearest branch.
Your rights
Under UK consumer law, contract terms must be fair. A clause that locks you into paying for a gym you can't reasonably use may be considered unfair under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. If your gym refuses to let you cancel despite a significant move, contact Citizens Advice for guidance.
