When should you start looking?
Start getting quotes at least 4–6 weeks before your moving date. If you're moving during summer or at the end of the month (the busiest times), book even earlier. Most removal companies offer free surveys — either in person or via video call — to assess how much you have and give an accurate quote. Check out our moving day survival guide to know what to expect on the day.
How to compare quotes
Get at least three written quotes and make sure they cover the same scope — packing, loading, transport, unloading, and insurance. Ask whether the quote is fixed or an estimate, as estimates can increase on the day. Check what's included: some firms charge extra for stairs, long carries, or dismantling furniture.

Look for membership of the British Association of Removers (BAR), which sets standards for professionalism and offers a dispute resolution service. Check online reviews, ask for references, and confirm they have goods-in-transit insurance. Be wary of unusually cheap quotes — they often come with hidden extras or poor service.
How much does it cost?
A local move for a two-bedroom house typically costs between £400 and £800. Moving long-distance or for a larger property can cost £1,000–£2,500 or more. Packing services usually add £200–£500. Costs vary by distance, volume, access difficulty, and time of year. Decluttering before you move can reduce the volume and bring down the price.
